Animal Evaluation Prior to Sale

The following will be evaluated prior to a goat being advertised or sale. Photos or videos will be taken of the animal to document their condition at the time the advertisement is placed. You are welcome to ask for new pictures once you have decided to purchase an animal and a price has been agreed upon before you arrange transport or arrive to pick up your animal.

1. FAMACHA: a picture of the goat's FAMACHA will be posted along with our interpretation of the score. See:

2. Teats on doelings, testicles on bucklings. No animal will be sold with extra teats or missing testicles.

3. Photos from all angles to document body condition, coat condition, and conformation.

4. Stool consistency: goats will be observed to ensure they are producing normal pellet stool. No goat will be sold with diarrhea.

5. Eye discharge, nasal discharge: No goats will be sold with evidence of eye or nasal discharge

6. Lymph node palpation: all externally palpable lymph nodes will be checked for evidence of enlargement

7. Other lumps or bumps: any other lumps, bumps, or skin abnormalities will be documented and disclosed. It is common for goats to get vaccination side abscesses. All our goats are vaccinated on the LEFT side (non-show side) in locations distant from lymph nodes to help reduce the fear that these bumps are CL. See:

8. Feet: goats will have their hooves trimmed prior to listing. Anything unusual will be treated prior to sale or disclosed.

9. California Mastitis Test: if we are selling a goat in milk, a CMT will be done and confirmed normal prior to listing for sale.

Additional things that can be done

For any full priced show-quality goat of any age, a buyer may request additional testing to be performed after a deposit has been given for the animal. This testing will be done at the full expense of the buyer, and no refund for the cost of the testing will be given if the buyer does not go through with the sale.

1. Milk Culture: done only on does in milk.

2. Fecal Egg Count: mostly of concern for buyers looking for animals with genetic parasite resistance.

Goat Sale Health Notice

Goat Purchase Agreement & Health Notice

Thank you for purchasing a goat from my herd. I do my best to keep my animals healthy, but it’s important to understand how raising and selling livestock works and what risks come with moving an animal to a new farm.

At Time of Sale

· All current health considerations I am aware of concerning the goat for sale have been verbally disclosed and/or listed on the Bill of Sale. Beyond this, to the best of my knowledge, the goat is healthy when it leaves my farm.

· Once the goat leaves here, its care, feeding, and health are in the buyer’s hands.

Quarantine

· New goats should be kept separate from the rest of your herd for at least 30 days.

· Watch closely for signs of sickness during this time.

Vet Check & Illness Within 10 Days

· I strongly recommend you have your new goat checked by a livestock vet prior to or as soon as it arrives at your property.

· If the goat shows signs of illness within 10 days of purchase and while it is still in quarantine, the buyer must:

o Contact me right away.

o Have the goat examined by a livestock vet for a diagnosis and treatment plan within 3 days of the onset of illness.

· Please understand that no reimbursements will be considered for goats that are not examined by an experienced livestock veterinarian.

· If the vet believes the goat was already sick at the time of sale, the buyer may request reimbursement of up to the purchase price of the goat to help with vet costs.

· The buyer must allow me to speak directly with the vet, and the vet must confirm in writing that the illness was present before the goat left my farm—not from stress, diet changes, management, or bad luck.

· If the goat should die within 10 days of purchase despite ongoing veterinary treatment, or the vet determines that the goat must be euthanized for humane purposes, then a refund of no more than the purchase price of the goat will be reimbursed to the buyer.

· Without all of the above being carefully followed, no reimbursement will be given. Your understanding that the intention of the above is to help with a difficult situation in good faith, aid in the treatment of an animal I care about, and give me a chance to learn how improve my herd management so as to prevent further such sad instances from occurring, is sincerely appreciated.

Disease Risks in Show Goats

· Like all livestock, goats can carry hidden illness that sometimes show up during stress (like moving).

· Because my goats participate in large goat shows and events, they are inherently exposed to a broader range of potential pathogens than goats that have not been shown. While I practice responsible herd management, this increased exposure should be understood and considered by the buyer.

Internal Parasites

· All goats, regardless of farm or management quality, have some level of internal parasites, especially stomach worms. This is a universal health reality and not a sign of poor herd management (see American Consortium for Small Ruminant Parasite Control, WormX.com).

· My deworming and parasite management practices follow the protocols recommended by WormX, which are based on veterinary research and best practices.

· Buyers are strongly encouraged to reference WormX.com for accurate, research-based information on goat parasites.

· WormX recommends that all new goats be dewormed with multiple products while in quarantine, before joining the main herd.

· All goats leaving my farm have a FAMACHA score completed and recorded prior to listing for sale. This information has been provided to you. Understand that parasite blooms are a common occurrence during transport and times of stress.

· Because internal parasites are a natural and expected part of goat ownership, no reimbursement will be given for the presence or treatment costs of parasites. Parasite management is the responsibility of the new owner.

Working with a Veterinarian

· It is very important to establish a working relationship with an experienced livestock veterinarian.

· Online advice, including from websites or Facebook groups, cannot substitute for a hands-on veterinary exam.

· Once the goat leaves my property, my ability to provide meaningful health advice is limited, since a large part of goat health depends on your own farm’s management, feeding, and practices.

· I recognize that veterinary care can be expensive, but it is a necessary and responsible part of goat ownership.

Buyer Responsibility

· Beyond the 10-day illness clause above, no refunds or replacements are offered once the goat leaves my farm, as is clearly stated in the Bill of Sale.

· Due to biosecurity reasons, no goat can be returned after it has left the farm.

· The buyer takes full responsibility for the goat’s health and care from the time it leaves here.

Buyer Acknowledgment

I understand and accept the risks and responsibilities that come with buying and caring for livestock.
