Coccidia — The Kid Killer That Isn't a Worm

If you are raising kids in Florida, coccidia is not a "might happen." It is a "will happen," and the only question is whether you're ahead of it or behind it. The vet experts say it plainly: the infection rate approaches 100 percent, so assume every kid is exposed rather than treating it as an occasional problem. Wormx.info lists it alongside barber pole worm as one of the two primary internal parasites of goats.
That sounds grim, and for a new owner watching a kid scour it can feel that way. But there is good news buried in it. Because exposure is universal, the goal was never to keep coccidia off your farm. The goal is to keep the dose low and the kid strong until its immune system catches up, which it reliably does. Nearly every adult goat on earth carries coccidia and is completely fine. Your job is to get the kids there.
What coccidia actually is
Coccidia are not worms. They are microscopic single-celled organisms, Eimeria species, that invade the cells lining the intestine, multiply inside them, and burst out to invade more. Every cycle destroys gut lining. The damage is what causes the diarrhea, the poor absorption, and the stunting.
A few facts about them shape everything else:
They are host-specific. Goat coccidia only infect goats. Your kids cannot catch it from chickens, dogs, cattle, or even sheep. They catch it from other goats, usually their own dams.
They multiply explosively. A single oocyst (the tough, egg-like stage passed in manure) can produce many thousands of new oocysts within a few weeks. A dozen oocysts is nothing; a barn floor with millions is an outbreak waiting for a trigger.
The oocyst has to "ripen" outside the goat. Freshly passed oocysts aren't infectious. They need a few days of warmth and moisture to sporulate. Then they can survive for months in the environment. Sunlight and dryness kill them; wormx.info names exposure to sunlight and cleanliness as the two most effective means of killing coccidia. Nothing else you can buy comes close.
Immunity comes with exposure, and it's durable. Kids that meet a modest dose build solid protection. Kids that meet an overwhelming dose get sick first.
Why kids, and why the timing is so predictable
Kids are exposed from birth. Wormx.info notes that older animals are the source of infection for younger ones. Does shed heavily around kidding, in the same immune slump that causes the barber pole egg rise. The kid nurses from a contaminated udder, noses around contaminated bedding, and swallows oocysts in its first days.
Then there's a lag of roughly 28 days, with the organism replicating in the intestine by about day 17. That is why coccidiosis so reliably shows up at three to five weeks of age, and why "my kids were fine and then they all fell apart at a month old" is the most common story new owners tell. The danger window runs from about one month to four months, tapering off by six. Wormx.info gives the susceptible range as one to six months.
Disease breaks out when exposure meets stress. Wormx.info's list is almost a diary of normal kid-raising: weaning, crowding, a feed change, a weather swing, hauling to a show, kidding season itself. The kid's immune system was coping, then something tips the balance and the coccidia win.
What it looks like
Watery diarrhea, sometimes dark or with mucus, occasionally a streak of blood, usually not frankly bloody
A kid that's straining, sometimes to the point of rectal prolapse
Rough coat, pot belly, dull eyes, hanging back
Stalled growth. This is the sign that's easy to miss and hurts the most.
No fever. This helps separate it from bacterial scours.
In severe cases, dehydration, weakness, and death
One trap worth naming twice: coccidia can look like barber pole worm on bloodwork. Wormx.info warns that affected kids can show anemia and low protein, exactly what barber pole causes. A scouring kid with pale eyelids might have either, or both. Treating just one is a common way to lose a kid.
The lasting damage is the reason prevention matters more here than with any other parasite. Wormx.info is blunt about it: kids that develop clinical signs may never recover from the setback. A kid that scours badly at five weeks is often the small one in the group at a year old, and if it's a doeling, the one that milks least.
The Florida problem
Florida is harder, and coccidia is where that's most true. Here's why.
It never gets cold enough or dry enough. Oocysts sporulate in warmth and moisture and die in sun and drought. Across most of the country, winter freezes and summer dry spells knock the environmental load back. Central Florida gives you a few weeks of either, at best. Our humidity keeps bedding damp, our afternoon rains keep the ground wet for half the year, and our warmth keeps the oocysts ripening year-round. There is no season here when a dirty pen is "safe."
Kidding season lands in the wet. Many Florida herds kid in late winter and spring so kids are grown before the worst of summer, which is sensible for barber pole. But spring kids hit the one-to-four-month danger window just as the rains start, when pens are at their wettest. Fall kidders get a drier window but their kids are weaned into summer heat stress instead.
Barber pole and coccidia arrive together. In a northern herd, a kid might meet coccidia in the barn in March and barber pole on pasture in June. In Florida both are active at once, so a stressed kid can be hit from two directions, and as noted above, the signs overlap.
Heat is a stressor. Wormx.info lists weather change among the triggers. A Florida August is a stress event that lasts three months.
None of this means Florida kids can't be raised well. Plenty are. It means the environmental side of prevention, which is optional in some places, is mandatory here.
Prevention: the environment first
Wormx.info's prevention advice comes down to moisture, sanitation, crowding, and stress, and it says prevention and control is the best course of action. In Florida, practically:
Dry, dry, dry. Deep bedding that's topped up or stripped often enough that the surface stays dry to the touch. Good drainage so pens don't puddle. Roof overhangs so rain doesn't blow in. Fans help.
Sunlight. If you can give kids a clean, sunny, well-drained outdoor area, the sun is doing free work for you. Rotate pens to let the sun at them between groups.
Feed and water off the ground. Wormx.info specifically says facilities should prevent fecal contamination of troughs and water, and supplements should not be fed on the ground. Kids climbing into creep feeders and standing in water buckets are the classic route.
Don't overcrowd. Crowded pens mean more manure, more moisture, more stress, more oocysts. Fewer kids per pen is one of the highest-return changes you can make.
Separate ages. Adults, especially fresh does, are the reservoir. Wormx.info recommends keeping kids away from older animals. On a dairy where kids are pulled at birth, this is built in; on a dam-raised farm, at least keep the kid area separate from the main herd's loafing area.
Clean udders at kidding and for the first weeks if kids are nursing.
Manage the doe before kidding. Wormx.info's periparturient article notes a coccidiostat can be fed to does in late gestation to reduce the oocysts they shed into the birthing area. Amprolium is considered safe in pregnancy for this purpose.
Weaning gently. Wormx.info's own list of triggers has weaning on it. Wean gradually, keep the feed the same through the transition, and don't stack weaning on top of hauling, disbudding, or vaccinating.
Prevention: the medicated side
Because exposure is universal and the damage is permanent, most experienced Florida kid raisers use a preventive product during the danger window on top of good management. These products are called coccidiostats: they don't kill coccidia outright, they slow its multiplication so the kid's immune system can catch up. Because of that, they need to be started before the risk period, not after scours appear. Wormx.info cautions that coccidia can become resistant with extended or inappropriate use, so preventives should run only during the expected risk period and then stop.
Here is what's actually on the shelf in the U.S., by drug and brand:
Decoquinate — sold as Deccox (0.6% premix) and Deccox-M (a finer powder meant for milk). This is the one FDA-approved coccidiostat for young, non-lactating goats, and the workhorse of most kid programs. It is very safe, has no meat withdrawal, and has a wide margin of error if you over-mix. Your reference document notes that Deccox-M can go straight into milk or a lambar from about a week of age, then kids transition to Deccox pellets blended into their grain, and that the VMX 2025 veterinary notes rate it more effective than monensin. Deccox is also in many commercial "medicated" goat kid feeds. The catch: it only works if the kid actually eats enough of it, which is the weakness of relying on medicated creep alone (see below). Not for does in milk.
Monensin — sold as Rumensin. FDA-approved as a feed additive for coccidia prevention in confined, non-lactating goats. It's an ionophore, the same family as lasalocid, and it is where the safety warnings start: monensin is deadly to horses and dogs, and it's toxic to goats themselves if the feed is mixed wrong. Extension sources consistently say to have a feed mill mix it rather than doing it yourself. It's common in commercial goat feeds sold as "medicated" in feed stores, so read the tag on any bag you buy for kids.
Lasalocid — sold as Bovatec, and in milk additives such as Calf-Pro and Pro-Bac C. FDA-approved for confined sheep, not goats, so any goat use is extra-label. The milk-additive versions are popular on dairies for bottle kids; your reference document records Calf-Pro started at about two weeks of age, 1 cc per 10 pounds daily, and Pro-Bac C as a powder that can be mixed into a lambar. Same warnings as monensin: toxic to dogs and horses, never combined with Rumensin, and easy to overdose in a small kid. Weigh kids every week or two if you use it.
Amprolium — sold as Corid (9.6% oral solution, or 20% soluble powder). Corid is labeled for cattle, so it's extra-label in goats, but it's the most widely used coccidia product in the country and is sometimes run as a low-dose preventive in water. It's discussed in more detail under treatment. Your reference document notes it's considered safe to give a pregnant doe in the weeks before kidding if her fecal is positive, to reduce what she sheds into the kidding pen.
Medicated creep feed alone is not enough. This is worth its own line because it's the most common way prevention fails. A bag labeled "medicated with decoquinate" or "with monensin" is dosed on the assumption that a kid eats a certain amount of feed per pound of body weight. Young kids often don't, especially while they're still on milk. Treat medicated feed as a backstop to a milk-additive or a properly mixed program, not the program itself.
Timing. Sources in your reference document range from starting at two to four weeks of age and continuing to somewhere between four and ten months. Any of those is defensible; the important part is to be on it before the one-month mark and to stay on it consistently through the danger window rather than starting and stopping.
Treatment when a kid breaks
By the time a kid is scouring, coccidia has been multiplying for weeks and much of the damage is done. Treat anyway, because you're stopping further damage and protecting the penmates. Wormx.info's rule is that all animals in the group should be treated during an outbreak, because the rest are incubating the same thing. Dewormers do nothing against coccidia; you need one of the products below.
In the U.S., there are two treatments that goat vets actually use, plus one that everyone talks about.
Sulfadimethoxine — sold as Albon (12.5% oral solution or tablets), Di-Methox (12.5% solution or 40% injectable), and SulfaMed-G (40% injectable). This is a sulfa antibiotic, and it's the treatment named as the drug of choice in the VMX 2025 veterinary notes in your reference document. It's labeled for cattle and dogs, extra-label in goats. The standard course is a higher loading dose on day one followed by four more days at half that; your document lists 55 mg/kg then 27.5 mg/kg, or in practical terms about 1 cc per 5 pounds of the 40% injectable given by mouth on day one and 1 cc per 10 pounds on days two through five. It tastes terrible; a little fruit punch or Jell-O helps. Your document lists a 12-day meat and 5-day milk withdrawal. Because it's an antibiotic, some producers prefer to hold it for confirmed cases rather than routine use.
Amprolium — sold as Corid (9.6% oral solution, 20% soluble powder, or crumbles). Labeled for cattle, extra-label in goats. Corid works by mimicking thiamine (vitamin B1) so the coccidia starve. The dose used in goats is 50 mg/kg by mouth daily for five days, which works out to roughly 1 cc of the 9.6% solution per 5 pounds. Beware, some vets dilute it in water and others report giving it straight, however, some note the undiluted product is caustic and can burn the mouth. Because of how it works, do not give thiamine, B-complex, Red Cell, or a thiamine-containing electrolyte during the course, but do give B-complex for a few days afterward, since thiamine deficiency (polio) has been reported as a rare side effect. The VMX 2025 notes add two limits: Corid isn't effective in a kid that's still mostly on milk, and should be reserved for kids over a month old. Putting Corid in the water trough is a common shortcut that doesn't guarantee any individual kid gets a full dose; dose each kid by mouth.
Toltrazuril (Baycox) and ponazuril (Marquis). You will see these recommended on every goat forum, usually as a single-dose miracle. The facts as of this writing: Baycox is approved for goats in Australia, Europe, and elsewhere, but has no FDA approval for any food animal in the U.S. Ponazuril (Marquis) is approved only for horses. The American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners' guidance states that compounded toltrazuril, ponazuril, or diclazuril made from bulk drug is prohibited in food animals under any circumstances, that products approved in other countries can't legally be imported for food-animal use here, and FDA has issued warning letters to online sellers. FARAD will not give a withdrawal time. Producer-side dosing that circulates (about 1 cc per 5 pounds of the 5% product) and a veterinary caution against using it in dairy kids or future milkers, and flags the question as one to settle with your own vet. The honest summary: it works, and in the U.S. a goat owner who buys it online is on their own legally and has no way to know what's in the bottle.
A quieter ally: tannin forage
Wormx.info reports research in which lambs and kids fed sericea lespedeza needed markedly fewer coccidia treatments than those on alfalfa, with cleaner hindquarters and, in one trial, no post-weaning treatments at all versus a third of the control group. The tannins seem to make the gut a worse place for coccidia to multiply. If you're already looking at lespedeza pellets or hay for barber pole, this is a second reason.
Putting it together for a Florida kid crop
Reduce what the does shed: clean kidding pens, a coccidiostat in late gestation if your vet agrees.
Kids on dry, deep bedding from day one, feeders and water up off the ground, sun on the pens between groups.
A preventive in the milk or feed from two to four weeks of age through the danger window, then stop.
Wean gently and never stack stressors.
Watch for the one-month mark. Any scouring kid, or any kid that stops growing, gets a fecal and gets treated along with its penmates.
Check eyelids too. A scouring kid with pale membranes may have barber pole as well.
The mindset
Coccidia is the one parasite where "some level is expected" cuts both ways. Every kid needs a little exposure to build the immunity that will protect it for life. What it can't survive is a big dose in a wet pen at a stressful moment. You cannot eliminate coccidia from a Florida farm, and you don't need to. Keep the pens dry, keep the numbers down, keep the kids strong, and treat the first scour like the group emergency it is. A kid that gets through the first four months without a bad bout will most likely never have a problem again.
